What's the Best Milk Frother?
Advice, Reviews, & Buying Guides for 2019

MatchaDNA Handheld Electric Milk Frother ReviewIn this post, I’ll cover the best milk frothers available in 2019.

If you’re like me, there’s nothing better than starting the day with a creamy cappuccino. While a cup of black coffee will get me energized, a homemade cappuccino tastes so much better and forces me to start my day productively just moments after I’ve hopped out of bed.

One of the most important elements for making the perfect cappuccino is the foam. In order to get it right, you’ll need the proper tool — a milk frother.

I have been a cappuccino fan for most of my adult life, but never really thought about how to make one until I got fed up waiting in line at Starbuck’s one morning.

After a few moments looking online, I realized that it wasn’t that difficult. I simply needed espresso and milk foam. I had an espresso machine already, so I focused on learning how to make the foam.

When it comes to frothers, there are a lot of different models to choose from. If you’re considering to buy one for your home or office, you’ll need to know all the facts to make a smart purchase decision. Lucky for you, I’ve done the research and gathered a lot of information during my own journey.

So grab a cup of your favorite coffee and let me share what I discovered.

What is a Milk Frother?

A milk frother is a utensil used to create the creamy foam in coffee-based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. It aerates milk, forming tiny bubbles that transform the liquid’s texture into a light foam with increased volume.

They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but there are three distinct types of milk frothers you should be aware of — manual, handheld, and automatic. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages, but I’m sure one of them will fit your needs.

Manual Milk Frothers

Manual Milk FrothersThe first type doesn’t rely on any electrical components. Instead, the user creates the foam through manual actions. If you’ve used a french press before, this is quite similar.

You’ll often have a cup and a plunger attachment with a mesh screen that is moved up and down in the milk. To create the foam, you only have to work for about 10-20 seconds.

Manual milk frothers are easy to use and clean, so they are a viable option. They are also inexpensive and can be used for other things too.

Handheld Milk Frothers

Handheld Milk FrothersThe second type of frother is handheld and typically battery powered. You’ll often see these referred to as milk frother wands based on their appearance.

By holding the handle and turning the wand on, a spinning attachment injects air into the milk and froths it to whatever consistency you want. This requires less physical effort than a manual frother and works in less time too.

Many users like these because of their portability. If you travel often of don’t have a lot of countertop real estate available, a cordless handheld frother is a perfect choice.

A final benefit is it can be used to beat eggs or whip cream if you don’t want to hunt for your mixer.

Automatic Milk Frothers

Breville BMF600XL Milk Café MilkThe final type of frother is automatic. These are also electric, but are typically plugged into a power outlet. That means you get hands-free operation, but you’ll also have to make sure you have room in your kitchen to accomodate the carafe and power base.

These frothers are the most versatile since most have induction heating to warm milk and can create large amounts of foam for all the coffee drinkers in your household or office. They also use a frothing disc to deliver the fastest, high-quality foam.

If you’re looking for something unique, yet durable, then look no further. The Secura frother and warmer comes with a magnetic motor to ensure the whisk won’t fall from the body. Milk Frother Buying Guide 2019

Consider the Features You Need

Review the temperature settings and decide whether you’ll really need both cold or hot froth. Also think about how much capacity is essential. Many frothers include level indicators that help you estimate how little or how much milk you should pour, so keep that in mind. Finally, we recommend having a detachable carafe if you are going the automatic route. It’ll help save you time when pouring and cleaning.

READ UP ON THE QUALITY

Make sure to check the brand and the materials used. Ideally you want fine stainless steel, but there are products with ABS plastic as well. You don’t want your new frother to break easily, so make sure the materials are durable and of course safe (look for food-grade).

Stainless steel gives a minimalist look so you won’t have to worry about it not matching the kitchen. When used on the exterior, it also makes it easier for you to clean because you’re assured that milk marks won’t be a problem.

DETERMINE WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD

Aside from the different characteristics that make a frother unique, its affordability is also something any consumer should consider. Be sure to check the different features and prices of products and make a habit of comparing their prices.
